Helping you back to health

Cranial
Osteopathy

You may have arrived on this page because you want to know what Cranial Osteopathy is. Or perhaps you know someone who’s had this type of treatment and they’ve recommended it. Maybe you’ve heard that it’s often used with small babies and children and you want to know if it’s safe.

Here you’ll find answers to these questions and more.

What is Cranial Osteopathy?

The first thing we always explain is that Cranial Osteopathy isn’t a separate thing in itself. It’s actually a name for an approach that Osteopaths use. If you go and see a ‘Cranial Osteopath’ you’re consulting with an Osteopath, registered with the General Osteopathic Council who’s done further training and specialised in using the cranial approach. We’re a centre of excellence at WBOC with Members and Fellows of the Sutherland Cranial College of Osteopathy who have qualifications up to Doctorate level.

How does it work?

Cranial Osteopathy works on a more subtle level than some of the more general stretches, clicks, mobilisations and other hands-on approaches that you may have experienced before. But the aim of this approach is still the same. We use a highly trained sense of touch to feel changes of tension and tissue quality in the whole body. In this way we work with areas of strain or dysfunction to help you back to health.

What does it feel like?

‘It feels amazing’. That’s what lots of our patients say. They also say that it feels relaxing, interesting, healing or fascinating. Some people don’t say much at all as they move into a state of deep peacefulness during treatment. The cranial approach is gentle. It’s so gentle that this is the type of work we do with babies and children from new-borns to teenagers. In fact this approach is safe and suitable for people of all ages.
